The vote on the health care reform bill is set fo Sunday and President Obama is still struggling to get the votes he needs. The magic number for passage is 216. Estimates range as to how many votes Democrats currently have but everyone agrees it will be very close. Here are the latest updates on the vote count as it stand now.
(1) Fox News is reporting that the Democrats already have the 216 they need for passage of the bill. The article does not list all 216 members who are confirmed to be voting for the bill. Instead they say their tally is based on an "estimate by Fox News, based on all the lawmakers who have gone on the record with their position on the new legislation and using as November's House vote as a baseline." To their credit the article does go through a detailed analysis of lawmakers who have switched to "yes" or "no" votes on the legislation. Fox News would also have little reason to give optimistic news to Democrats since they are generally seen as being opposed to reform.
(2) Talking Points Memo reports that the abortion is still a hurdle for Democrats to overcome for passage. According to the article Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) is still holding by his position to not based on the bill because of the current abortion language. Rep. Stupak is rumored to have a number of Representatives committed to vote with him so his vote matter tremendously.
(3) Talking Points Memo also has a very comprehensive list of Representatives who are still undecided and some notes on which way each may be leaning. At this point Talking Points Memo has not said that the Democrats have the 216 they need.
(5) Finally the Huffington Post is also providing updates on any vote changes but they also are not willing to say the Democrats have what they need. The article does say that Democrats have momentum on their side given the recent string fo "no" votes changed over to "yes" votes.
