The Democrats have been using a Senate protocol known as blue slips, to hold up all of President Trump's federal court nominees. It is so serious, that at the same point in the presidency of Barack, 350 appointees had been approved compared to 180 for Trump. We won the election. The Dems need to sit down and shut the hell up. Turns out, Mitch McConnell has had enough, as well. Next week, he is going to push through 4 nominees.
We’ll know soon enough if this is the last word on blue slips, or just
an important part of a continuing struggle. But the entire saga shows
once again how large a priority Republicans, conservatives, and
especially Christian conservatives place on reshaping the federal
judiciary. By basically turning over his judicial nominating process
to hard-core ideologues, Donald Trump has gone a long way toward
overcoming the mistrust of Republican presidents among those whose
primary focus is to reverse federal court precedents legalizing abortion
and same-sex marriage, and allowing the expansion of the federal
government at the expense of property owners. It is as crucial a part of
his ability to maintain support among his base as anything he says or
does on immigration or trade or race relations. Possibly under duress,
Mitch McConnell is offering Trump a big assist on the judicial front. If
it sticks, it will matter for a long, long time.
