Our recent anti-terrorist successess - an American victory or just dumb luck?

The new face of our Muslim enemy. Young, stupid and deadly. "Stupid" can be fixed and, therein, is our concern. Understand that since 9/11, there has been at least 33 terrorist attempts within the Homeland -- ten of them during the Obama year in office with one successful effort (Fort Hood with 13 dead and 32 wounded).

From the beginning of the process, it takes between 5 months and two years to become a "naturalized" citizen. The New York car bomber had gone through this process and became a citizen on April 19 of 2009. How many enemy combatants have gone through this process? Well, certainly we do not know the answer to that question.

But we do know that with the completion of this process, enemy combatants receive the benefit of Constitutional protections including trial by jury, Miranda rights protection, and protection from interrogation without a lawyer. Our Muslim enemies are people who are willing to die for their cause. Who believes they fear a life-time of imprisonment where they can be used as recruiters in the continuing Muslim effort to destroy this country? In other words, this young man is now a "permanent" force in Islam's war against this nation. We note his "promotion" and wonder if Obama's government will allow him the freedom while in prison to convert others to his cause.

Some wonder if this man will be tried as an "enemy combatant" in a military tribunal. Understand that he is an American citizen. Obama has little choice on this matter. This citizen was arrested on US soil, has an address in this country and is due the protections offered to any US citizen. Islam understands the rules of engagement and will use them to their advantage. The War on Terror has come to the homeland. New laws are needed, no doubt, as well as a serious review of interrogation methods and investigative strategies.

While some are proclaiming an "American victory" in the capture of the auto bomber suspect, Midknight Review strongly disagrees. Luck is our only victory . . . luck coupled with a remarkable display of stupidity. Look, this "bomber" bought the wrong kind of fertilizer and set one of two timers for 7 pm instead of 7 am. Further, he was not aware that vin numbers on an auto are located in at least 10 different locations on any given auto. We doubt he understood all that he could have done to hide his identity. What is unsettling is the obvious fact that this young man will offer information to others as to what was done correctly and what did not work. Bush was concerned with keeping the battlefield in this war on foreign soil. Those days are over. We need a president who understands this. We need a president who is fully focused on this circumstance.

Remember the Christmas bomber? He couldn't set his shoe on fire (I have 14 grandkids that burn a whole house down !!) and, thus , failed in his attempt to kill more than 300 inflight passengers. Dumb luck coupled with a remarkable display of studity.

Speaking of stupidity, Obama is still talking about a civilian trial for KSM, closing GITMO without having any sort of substitution plan --- after 17 months of being in office (!!) and pretending that we are not at war with Islam. Geeeesh. And some think Palin would have been a poor choice for President??!!

Again, "speaking of stupidity," we have Mayor Bloomberg telling Katie Couric two days ago that the bomber could have been someone who was angry with . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . healthcare.

Before closing out this post, we must give credit to our secret services. The current anti-terror system was set into place by President Bush and look how it is working? Great !! Just two days following this failed attack, a suspect has been arrested, here -- actually three arrests have been made in addition to the news that another arrest was made, yesterday, in Pakistan. Whether all arrested will be found to be complicit, certainly our anti-terror investigative efforts are doing a wonderful job. Hats off to G.W. and the men and women "behind the scenes." ---- jds.
