Of the 1236 votes needed to win the GOP primary process,  Iowa counts for the following: 

8 votes total,  goes to the winner.

The runner-up gets 6 votes 

And,  third gets 4.  

That's it   . . . . . .   plus a little momentum.  

Turns out Iowa, with its 18 primary vote offering,   is only "important" because it is the first primary event   . . . . .   period.  We have a long way to go.  South Carolina is considered a bellwether primary state.  Over the past four decades,  only one GOP candidate did not win in South Carolina.
