Religions of Syria 101.

Lebanon has the largest Christian population in the Middle East.  The corridor running north from Lebanon is an extension of the Lebanon Christian circumstance.  Sharia is the most radical of the Muslim faithful. Sunni's are the secularists within Islam and are often seen as "pro-West" in relative terms.  Yezidi is a declining element within Islam that is considered extremely "weird" and is of no consequence in the current matter involving the US and Syria.    The "Alawites" as noted on the map,  are mystic Muslims (another code word for "weird") and are based in the northwest Shina region of the nation.
