Mission Statement: This blog reviews the news of the day in light of 242 years of American history. "Nationalism," a modern day pejorative, has been our country's politic throughout history, until 2008. Obama changed that narrative. Trump is seeking a return to our historical roots. Midknight Review supports this return to normality.

Smithson received this info courtesy of David Rose.
ReplyDeleteThe stupidity is persistent and fun to read. Proving a long term trend based on a one yr comparison photo, (not to mention ice thickness or volume) is truly the kind of foolishness we can expect from people with less than a 9th grade science education. Smithson eats it up.

... some info on D. Rose
The UK tabloid Daily Mail, and has a history of running ridiculously misleading claims downplaying the reality of climate change. Probably the worst offender is David Rose, who has been constantly hammering the idea—despite all the evidence against it—that the Earth has not been getting warmer for the past 16 years. To make this claim he has to egregiously cherry-pick his data, choosing where to look on a graph of temperatures to make it look like warming has slowed.
I’ve shown just how Rose is so fast and loose with reality in previous posts, when he first came to my attention for claiming warming had stopped (and then tried to show that the Sun’s lack of activity would cool the Earth, a claim for which there is essentially no good evidence), and then again when he posted a graph so wrong it would mean getting an F in ninth-grade math. You can also read debunkings of Rose’s ridiculosities from the UK Met Office, the national weather service for the United Kingdom, which regularly has to issue articles debunking the nonsense posted in The Mail.
My point was and is this: climate change is regional, not global and cyclical. THAT is climate science, dude. You bring up David Rose, someone who is as qualified to disseminate information as you, if not more so (what with your mail-order "PhD" and all) . . . . you bring up Rose because you have no defense for the two points just made. Me? I am drinking coffee and smiling at your persistent ignorance on these matters.

DeleteThis will give readers a perspective on Smithson, what he writes, how he thinks and perceives information.

Like I keep saying, "All warming trends are regional and ALL weather trends are cyclical." Period.
DeleteThe temp averages in California have remained stable for a couple of decades, with a spike in temp averages in the first part of 2014. You can go back into the 1950's for this weather pattern. Proving that all weather trends are regional and cyclical.
From today's NASA / NOAA press conference.

Global temperature departure from median.
http://icons.wxug.com/hurricane/2015/global-temps-1880-2014.png
How silly. Exactly what are the demographics of this study. I mean, which regions, went "hot," which remained within normal perimeters, and which were colder than normal? Bet you not only do not know the answer to this question, you can't tell me where to go to complete my own research. California has been within normal confines for a couple of decades, except for the spike that is 2014. Will this spike continue for years into the future, or will things cycle back to normal or below normal levels? You don't know. So, in the words of a veteran NFL QB, "relax."
DeletePlease post my previous comment that did not appear, the one regarding the global temperature trends. ...or perhaps it is too fact based for your blog? Or, perhaps you are too cowardly to post something that proves you wrong?
DeleteYou are really kind of an ass, aren't you. Keep calling me a coward and I am coming out to see you, moron. I will post whatever I want to post. But in this case, I have no idea what you are talking about. Try posting is again without being butt wipe.
Delete2014: Hottest Year in Recorded Human History
DeleteAccording to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, global surface temperatures in 2014 were well above the 20th century average, highest among all years in the 1880-2014 record, easily breaking the previous records of 2005 and 2010. Using independent measurement techniques but mostly the same set of surface stations, NASA also rated 2014 as the warmest year on record, as did the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Read that word again: GLOBAL.
NASA says this warming is happening in a time where natural forces should be cooling the planet. Instead, including 2014, nine out of ten of the warmest years in the 135-year period of record have occurred during the 21st century (2001–2014). The UK Met Office predicts that 2015 is likely to top 2014.
The fact that separate analyses by three major research groups rated 2014 as the warmest year on record should put to rest the bogus idea often espoused by climate change deniers that "global warming stopped in 1998." - Jeff Masters, PhD (Meteorology)
Who you going to believe, NASA, NOAA, the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the Japanese Meteorological Agency ... or are you going to believe Smithson with his quotes from David Rose?
Readers, notice how Smithson ends his comments, by insulting the commenter's "persistent ignorance" and declaring 'victory'. Is this the mark of someone who is to be believed in his statements?
Let the readers decide who to believe based on the facts and data. See the above links in previous comments. News stories below:

1. I have quoted David Rose, but when was the last time I did that? Virtually ALL of my information comes from NASA satellite feed or from NOAA. In fact my two oft repeated observations are of my own thinking, based on the scientific realities accepted by virtually everyone. To wit, all climate change is regional, not global in the singular sense of the word, and, all climate change is cyclical.
Delete2. "Anonymous" is no climate expert. In fact, using the same arguments he uses against the likes of David Rose, who is seldom quoted on this blog, btw, "Anonymous" would disqualify himself from speaking out on such matters. What are the credentials of Anonymous? He won't tell you because he does not practice what he preaches.
3. 2014 is the hottest year, supposedly, in 135 years, which is hardly all of "human history."
4. If true, 2014 is nothing more than a spike in a climate circumstance that has been stable since 1996. We are talking about one year, in this case. One year is hardly a pattern.
5. The US accounts for just 17% of all CO2 emissions (can you believe that the Left has branded the energy source for all plant life - co2 - and the food we eat, as poisonous?) world wide. The U.S. is not the problem, and no major country on the world's stage is doing anything significant in the fight to bring down green house emissions. That is just a fact. Thank gawd for co2. See it as a problem? Plant more trees and grow more food. Heaven knows the poor in Africa need the grub.
6. Many climate scientists and meteorologists believe that a reasonable warming trend in many of the regions of this earth, will continue for 200-300years, towards a max temp roughly matching that of the Medieval Warm Period.
7. Anyone with a brain and the ability to research the subject, knows that there have been many periods of time, in earth's history, when CO2 emissions exceeded what is going on today, by a mark-up of 4 to 10 times our modern day production. In other words, our time is not unique to Earth's history, in spite of the fantasies coming from the Left.
8. Heck, a 1000 years ago, the Vikings raised cattle, sheep and goats, on the grassy lands of . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Greenland. But a cooling trend began around 1200 AD and Greenland became an extension of Ice Land, In fact, Europe had a major food shortage crisis, a famine if you will, that killed thousands in 1315 AD, give or take a couple of years, because of a serious cooling trend.
9. In the years following this brief "Ice Age" period, the earth warmed. But by 1700 and the 20 year periods just before and after that date, there was another cooling trend, causing world wide famine in which millions, again, died, of starvation and related diseases. Anyone remember the picture of Washington crossing the Delaware (or was it the Potomac) and all that ice?
My point? The earth has been much warmer a number of times in the past, and much colder. You all do know that warming trends increase food production seasons and cooling stops food production, right? Cooling is, by far, the greatest of concerns . . . . and all of it is regionally experienced and cyclical in nature.
You forgot to mention Alinsky.
DeleteAnd you forgot to challenge any of my nine points. Do you not realize that when you are given a challenge or presented with an argument that counters your belief (i.e. "all climate change is regional, not 'global' in a singular sense of the term 'global warming' or all climate change is cyclical), the readership makes not and you lose credibility?
DeleteWe are presently at a solar minimum. All "natural" forces indicate the planet should be cooling, but despite this ... nine out of ten of the warmest years in the 135-year period of record have occurred (2001–2014). The trend is obvious to everyone.
Deletehttp://icons.wxug.com/hurricane/2015/global-temps-1880-2014.png
Why is this warming happening despite natural cooling forces? The answer is obvious to most non-science deniers. NASA's graphic says it all - does this look like a 'natural cycle' in the context of the last 400,000 yrs?
http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
Case closed. Game over.
Still, you ignore the fact that warming on the fantasy stage of "global" (all climate change IS regional) is at an 18 year "hiatus" (as warming scientist love to say). I have read countless articles that admit to this (see this article for an subtle example of this admission : http://www.climatenewsnetwork.net/why-we-should-be-cooling-not-warming/ ).
DeleteAnonymous loves to embellish. "hottest in human history" wound up being the warmest in . . . . . . . . . . . ah . . . . . . . . 135 years. "Global" turns out to be "regional averages" and, now, "400,000 years" turns out to be 11,000 years, or, is it “135” years (?) if we believe this source: http://www.climatenewsnetwork.net/why-we-should-be-cooling-not-warming/ . Case closed.
A critical point being ignored, here, is the fact that green house gases have continued to increase during the current 18 year "hiatus" and climate scientist really do not understand this. Thus, the email scandal of the early 2000's, in which scientists secretly discussed strategies to minimize the rhetorical damage done to the warming/cooling debate because of the slowdow versus increased emissions.
The reader can go to http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2011/11/23/climategate-2-0-new-e-mails-rock-the-global-warming-debate/, in Forbes, for a discussion of this scandal involving no less than 5,000 emails. Here is a quote from that article:
"“Any work we have done in the past is done on the back of the research grants we get – and has to be well hidden,” Jones writes in another newly released email. “I’ve discussed this with the main funder (U.S. Dept of Energy) in the past and they are happy about not releasing the original station data.”
Anonymous makes far too much out of the 2014 warming trends in some regions of the Earth, while continuing to ignore what many of his science buds are forced to admit, that there is a cooling or stablized trend for sometime. As things stand at this time, 2014 as the warmest year in 135 years, is an anomaly.
So pathetic... the dude attacks anonymous, continues to quote long debunked talking points like "climate-gate": the manufactured scandal, ignores multiple scientific communities, and apparently ...can't read a graph. He even quotes a Dept. Energy !! source. Unbelievable. This shows how conservatives, through ideology, media manipulation and stubborn 'marching orders' from their puppet masters can override the most obvious, ubiquitous and scientifically well supported facts and evidence.
DeleteIt goes beyond this issue. It is an indication of conservative's flawed ability to process information, when overwhelming facts are staring them in the face. It's actually worse than pathetic. It's dangerous, as Carl Sagan predicted 20 yrs ago. Today, we have science deniers chair science committees, like Inhoffe and Cruz. It's not appropriate for the nation that once led the world in science innovation.

I assume to don't answer my objections and statements (maybe 12 or 15 of them in the last several days) because you can't.
DeleteObama's approval rating is down to 37% (Reuters) and your rating is no better. No personal attack in the most recent response, or the one before that or the 9 point response before that. I am not posting any more of your "responses" until you give an answer to what I have written. Case closed for certain. Change the subject or answer my objections and facts, or put on you short shorts and go for a run.

If any of you read this blog, and about 1000 of you do (once in a while as many as 4,400), on a daily basis, what you read from Anonymous is something that is incredibly awesome. I forget how aged Anonymous is, but, I think he is in his early 50's . . . . and - seriously - he has the #1 time in the world for his age bracket. On the web, we can be anyone or anything we want to be, right? Well, this is for real. I ran a 52.6 440 yd dash 53 years ago, and this time is close to that. Problem: I ran my time when I was 18 and Anonymous ran his time as an old man of 50+. Who knows how fast he was or could have been, as a kid. Anyone know how good this really is ? I do. Let me put it this way: none of you will ever even meet someone this fast, in your pathetic life times . . . . . . . . THAT's how incredible this is.
DeleteI have three boys, all state wrestling champions and I can tell you this, they will know immediately, just how fast this is, when I tell them. Stunning report. I mean, "Damn !!!"
As much as we disagree and are disagreeable, I would walk up and shake your hand. I am that impressed. Very cool.
Thanks man, 55 in a few months.
DeleteCheers.
And you know what, I don't give a shit about global warming. Longer track season.
lol - seriously. (and I am talking about that last line of yours, just to be clear). Send me your email address, and maybe we can stay in touch. I have ancestors buried in Tenn and the Carolina's. I am planning a trip back there, working on a family tree for my kids. Maybe I could time it for one of your track meets. I have gone to your blogs. Very interesting, to say the least.
