Al Jazeera America, a new U.S.-based extension of the media
organization funded by the Qatar government, sees a vacuum in U.S.
investigative journalism and it plans to fill the hole by hiring 800 U.S.
journalists, including six reporters and producers in Chicago.
Officials from the nascent news channel, which plans to
begin broadcasting in July or August, have been meeting with news organizations
and advertisers in Chicago this week to promote its launch.
The 24-hour network aims to capture perspectives from
average Americans on topics such as health care, employment and corruption,
with less coverage of politicians and celebrities, said Ehab Al Shihabi,
executive director of international operations for the new channel. The channel
will air long-form reporting in a documentary style, he said.
“It's really about the real people in the mainstream with
heavy investigative journalism,” Mr. Al Shihabi said. Al Jazeera America will
be “covering domestic news from a global perspective and covering global news
in a local way,” he said.
