Militants armed with rockets have attacked the main Allied
military base in Afghanistan, leaving at least two people dead and a number of
others hurt.
The perimeter of Camp Bastion was breached as it was hit by
small arms fire and there was major damage to buildings, an aircraft hangar and
several military jets.
The two soldiers killed are thought to have been US Marines.
This facility is often subject to indirect fire, but
officials in Afghanistan say the damage that has resulted is far more severe
than normal. The attack was launched in the US area of the base.
Six of these Harrier jets were completely destroyed and two others damaged - a loss of more than $200 million dollars; the most costly attack of the Afghan war. |
Army Major Martyn Crighton, a spokesman at ISAF's Joint
Command, says the attack may still be ongoing.
Officials in Afghanistan said it was too early to know if
the attack was motivated by the anti-Muslim YouTube film which has sparked
violent protests in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Prince Harry is currently stationed at Camp Bastion on his second
tour of duty in Afghanistan - expected to last four months. [It appears that Prince Harry was the target of this attack - editor]
