Well done, of course. I think it makes a huge mistake, however. It admits to the criticism of his opposition, which is around 73 million of American voters. Less that 25% of his campaign promises were kept, according to PolitiFact. What in the world is going to tell us the second time around? And if we are still in an economic funk, he loses by historic margins.
According to Politifact, there are a total of 506 promises Obama made. Out of those, 134, or 26.5% were kept - not the "less that 25%" you mention. If you also include those that are in the works, the percentage is close to 70%. Add compromises and it goes closer to 80%. There were also stalled promises.
ReplyDeleteYou imply all promises were broken. That would be a lie. In regards to promises, I would have to say Obama was pretty good on his word...
Let's not quibble about percentages, Walter. My point is exactly the same whether 26% or 25%. Of course, "in the works" is nothing more than an end run around the truth -- Obama has failed or broken more promises than any president in my memory, and I am 65 years old. So much so, that one cannot believe anything he says.
ReplyDeleteMost recent example: Libya. We would be in that conflict for a period of days, not weeks. The war is not about regime change -- a laughable lie. And the notion that we will not put troops on the ground? Well that is as dependable a statement as "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."
I am working on an evaluation of Obama's rhetorical claims, stated strategies, and promises. There are hundreds of such examples. PolitiFact (and others) count promises in large, rhetorical collections rather than in specific elements. I do not.
For example, PolitiFact would count ObamaCare as a promise "kept." The facts give us a very different view: he promised a public option but did not deliver; he promised security in keeping our personal doctors -- a flat out lie for millions of Americans; he claimed a cost factor of under a billion dollars for ten years -- something that almost no one believes, anymore. Score 1 for Obama and 3 against on a promise PolitiFact would score simply as 1 for Obama.
I will make a point of being as picky in my appraisal as you seem to expect from conservatives. I suspect you allow for the gross misstatements of "fact" from the Lefties. Stay tuned.
