Update: 5:14am, pst, 12/22/2010: I woke up to a gathering of First Responders making their case [on FoxNews] for the passage of the 9/11 bill. Understand that most have insurance coverage through their union associations, but these benefits do not begin to cover the costs accruing because of the radical nature of illness suffered. One firefighter pointed to the sad fact that he had attended 44 funerals since 9/11, funerals of First Responders who died because of air breathed as they worked to rescue folks on that sad day.
Understand that both parties are to blame for this legislative shame. The Democrats had four years of Congressional control to deal with this problem and did nothing until this last minute. The GOP is now insisting on paying for this bill when they approved of a tax bill [two weeks ago] without covering the cost of same.
To the GOP: Sometimes, politics is nothing more than perception. This is one of those times. Pass the bill and move away from this PR nightmare. When you reassemble, cut cost with this bill specifically in mind and claim that victory. The Dems do not care about these folks. They only care about "political advantage." Do not give these nothing-burger impostors any satisfaction. And know this, you should have been the leaders in this legislation.
Want to pay for this 6.2 billion dollar expense? Well, there are more than 200 billion dollars "left over" in the TARP bill. And where is Obama on this matter? He knows full well that we can pass for the bill AND pay for it at the same time. And Jon Stewart. Where the hell was Jon Stewart 3 years ago or even last year. We are glad that he has joined the good guys, but, again, no one is without blame. That includes this editor.

I am as conservative as one gets, but I know how ridiculous the GOP looks in saying "no" to hundreds of First Responders. Put yourself in the shoes of these great Americans. Their medical bills are eating them alive. They have been dealing with this issue, in increasing measure, for 9 years and it is time for these folks to get the financial help they need. The bill will cost us all about 6 billion bucks and, sure, it may have "stuff" written into the law that no of us want.
But nothing seems more important to me than the critical needs of these responders.
Look, I am one of a few who thinks the American Veteran deserves just about anything he asks for because he was willing to put his life on the line for $1,200 a months.
Pass the stinking bill !!
