From the Forbes: Through the constant reminders by the Walker forces that it
was Scott Walker’s own office that originally approached the Milwaukee District
Attorney with a request for the investigation, along with Scott Walker’s
steadfast denial that he is a target of the on-going probe, the Governor has
been largely successful in keeping the investigation in the background of the
campaign—always “there” but never moving to the forefront of the debate.
To many Wisconsin voters—roughly one-half of the 77 percent
of Wisconsin residents who are familiar with the investigation according to the
most recent Marquette
Law School Poll —the issue is nothing more than ‘politics as usual’,
involving a Democratic District Attorney playing cat and mouse with the
potential of Walker’s involvement in order to score political points against
the Governor without having to actually charge him with any criminal activity.
Indeed, the DA’s office unwittingly aided the Governor in
his public defense when it came to light that employees of the District
Attorney signed petitions calling for Scott Walker’s removal, allegedly in the
very office location where the investigation is taking place. While there was
nothing apparently illegal about these people voicing their support for recall,
their actions played directly into the narrative of those who argue that
keeping Walker’s name as a part of the investigation is little more than a
politically motivated witch hunt.
