I am not suggesting that Trump needs to be defeated. I am only suggesting that (a) if the other candidates are going to fight off Trump, they need to confront him as he confronts them and (b) the candidates need maintain an impressive command of the issues as well as spending effective time on Trump. To use Reagan's 11th commandment, is a little ridiculous in view of Trumps willingness to trash that advice on every occasion. The days of Mr Nice Guy ended during the McCain and Romney campaigns.
Keep in mind that the man (Trump) just might self destruct. His repeated determination to deport every single illegal, as much as the hard hard Right thinks that to be a good idea, is an impossible task, yet, it was restated this past weekend. What is Trump going to do: send Border Patrol and buses into every community and forcibly remove these folks? Or, is he going to promise them a path to citizenship if they voluntarily self-deport? Secondly, his Iraqi "plan" is a mess. Clearly, he has not counseled with military leadership nor does he have a clue as to how he will hold the oil fields without a full blown second invasion.
Daniel Strauss / Politico:
Donald Trump bad-mouths his rivals
— The billionaire real estate mogul attacks Bush, and Paul, and
Walker, and Graham, and Fiorina. — HAMPTON, N.H. — Donald Trump, doing
a giddy victory lap after surviving another seemingly campaign-sinking
controversy, went on a tear on Friday night, delivering take-downs of
many of his rivals.
Editor's notes: How do you handle Donald Trump if you are one of the GOP candidates?
Rule #1: Never fight your opponent in their own back yard. Understand that Trump is a reality star. Now, he is more than this, but "reality T.V." is something he has mastered." If he brings up substantive issues (the Wisconsin debt, Fiorina's fight with Hewlett Packard, Bush's debt to his lenders, etc) have an answer that is equally substantive and promise to give more details after the debate . . . . . . and then eat his lunch in post debate comments.
Rule #2: Do not camp on the Trump opposition as Rand Paul is doing. This is an election about issues, BUT, do not ignore Trump, either.
Rule #3: Expose his weaknesses. Pound him in the ground for calling women pigs and accusing them of being subject to the hormonal cycles. Drive home the fact that his business bankruptcies are personal . . . . . they are Donald Trump stiffing his lenders for over a billion dollars and costing the jobs of close to 2,000 hard working people. Have info in hand of successful business people who have not claimed bankruptcy. Make a big deal of his Democrat ties, his pro-Planned Parenthood stance, his pro-"single-payer" leasing, his support of Nancy Pelosi with all her baggage. Make him explain his claim to take Iraqi oil, what happens if Mexico does not pay for the fence, specifically how he is going to defeat ISIS, how he is going to enforce the Iranian as to its support of the bomb AND/OR make a laughing stock of him for not having answers to these questions.
#2 - Updated for this 4th rule: Force him to reveal his plan on any and all given issues. To date, he has offered no serious or comprehensive details to his stated intentions as president. He should not be allowed a free pass on this matter, and, currently, that is the case.
