Most ridiculous chart of all time . . . . or is it?

At first glance, this appears to be one of the most ridiculous charts of all time. It is a charted record of top 20 population centers in the US since 1790. Really, you have to laugh when you look at the thing.

Assignment: on the far right, there are, indeed, 20 regions. How many different city/regions are represented on this chart? You can click on this link for the full article and help with the answer.
