I may have mislabeled Jon Huntsman as a "liberal."

He does believe in global warming, but, truth be told, so does Newt Gingrich, or, he used to. And, he does not believe that we should have gone into Iraq. After that comparison, what do we know about Jon Huntsman?

  • He pro-life and, unlike Romney, has always been pro-life.
  • As Governor of Utah, he crafted the largest tax cut in that states history.
  • He helped write health care reform without the mandate.
  • He will work to reduce our import volume of oil. Currently, we buy 60% of our oil supply.
  • The United States must be prepared to deal with our enemies who may apply cheaper, asymmetrical approaches to the battle. Our military and defense establishment must be effective in the cyber sphere and we must be able to handle the increasingly lethal and accurate ballistic and cruise missiles being acquired by many of our potential foes.
  • He is pro-international trade increases, urging the completion of the Doha, international trade negotiations. Currently, nothing is being done in this regard.
  • The United States should immediately initiate bilateral negotiations with Japan, India, Taiwan and Brazil.

Admittedly, Jon Huntsman is more liberal than I would want him to be, but, with Huntsman on the stand, or Mitt Romney for that matter, Newt Gingrich is not the only intelligent candidate on the stage. In fact, even that comment - my comment - fails to represent the others on the campaign trail in the proper light. The GOP has been gifted with a very intelligent and knowledgeable group of candidates.

We have 12 or 13 debates to go by mid-January. The GOP process is very different from that of the typical Democrat primary season. The Grand Old Party really slugs it out during the primary season.

The point of this post is to keep a sense of objectiveness when it comes to leaders, Republican leaders, such as Jon Huntsman. Take the time to visit the Huntsman site. I am not pushing his candidacy, but being better informed is always a good thing. We were ignorant of Obama's background, for the most part. We do not need an oncore performance on our part.
