A recent CNN/ORC poll gives Perry the lead and Palin fans much to cheer about

Here is our CNN/ORC poll hyper link. Last week, we all heard a lot about Perry's 27% approval compared to Romney's 14%. Fine. The really big surprise in this poll, as far as I am concerned, is the fact that, after all this time and without a decision to enter the presidential race, Sarah Palin came in third in this poll, with 10%, ahead of all other contenders except Perry and Romney.

There is more. Without Palin in the mix, Perry picked up 5 points to 32% and Romney shot up four points, to 18%. What does that mean? Well, for starters, it means that Palin has considerably more clout than anyone is giving her credit. A full three fourths of Palin supporters move to the two men who are the declared front runners. Keep in mind that Palin is not "in the race." She has no election "machine" in place. She has not been in any of the debates. Her exposure is almost nil.

Some suggest that Palin's popularity is because she is a genuine "looker." But men, in this survey, were 8% of her base compared to 13% as women.

She scores 12% with folks under 50 years of age. Romney scored 13% and Perry, who walked away from everyone in virtually every category, scored 24% with the under 50 crowd.

Palin came in 2nd to Perry with support of 14% coming from those who make 50k per year or less compared to Romney's 13% and Perry's 19%.

Most notably, Palin came in 2nd with Independents giving her a 14% margin, Romney at 13% and Perry at 26% .

Would Palin's numbers improve should she officially enter the race and "ace" a couple of debates? Absolutely. But look where she would begin, should she enter the race.

And this business that she has no appeal with Independents is so much hot air -- all of coming from the Establishment Left and Right. Understand that of the top three, Palin is the only one to challenge the Establishment. If we include Michele Bachmann in the mix, it is the women who oppose the Establishment in no uncertain terms.
