Harry Reid, moving to bribe Senators into signing onto the health care bill and personally rewriting whole sections of the 2700 page bill is a testament to his disregard for Constitutional process, as well.
And then there is Nancy Pelosi. From the Heritage Foundation, we have these summary points with regard to her applied theory of the legislative process:
- Selecting supportive committee chairmen and bending them to her will when that worked for her;
- Bypassing committees entirely and writing major bills in the Speaker’s office or via the Rules Committee;
- Creating and funding parallel quasi-committees (such as the “Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming” to outflank regular committee chairmen who might refuse to follow the Speaker’s lead;
- Using the powers described below to exert pressure on rank-and-file Members to support her agenda or to lower the volume of their opposition; and
- Preventing opponents from offering their own proposals or amendments during consideration of bills on the House floor.
As far as this editor is concerned, a first order of business needs to include putting shackles on the increasing power of one man governance in this country. We trusted our leaders with this power and all proved trustworthy . . . . until now.
Pass some laws that restrict the president's power and force Obama to veto that and, bam !!, you have your next election campaign feature.
