This guy is Fidel Castro. Until 2006, he was the dictator of Cuba. He lied his way into power, pretending to be an ally of the United States, using the CIA to acquire the force necessary to overthrow the Batista regime, once supported by the U.S.
For some reason, Wikipedia leaves this fact out of their biographical sketch of Castro, writing of his move to power with this rather uninformed statement:
"Castro subsequently came to power as a result of the Cuban Revolution, which overthrew the U.S.-backed[6] dictatorship of Batista,[7] and shortly thereafter became Prime Minister of Cuba (Fidel Castro, Wikipedia)."
In fact, this reading leaves one with the impression that Castro took power AWAY from he Batista's AND the United States, does it not ? Indeed, the Batista's were supported by the US, but the Federal Government lost interest in that regime and withdrew its support of the Batista's.
This editor was a kid in high school at the time Castro took power. His use of the United States to gain power and then, his immediate announcement that he was not an ally, that he was in fact, a Communist, is the very beginning of the United States opposition to his rule in Cuba. The United States was thoroughly embarrassed by this betrayal and has not moved away from its opposition to this killer's reign of terror since his announcement. It was his killing ways that separated him from members of his own family and moved the United States to several attempts at overthrowing Castro - even killing him via members of the Mafia.
At any rate, today's news is that Castro has decried his decisions to push Communism, nearly 60 years after the fact, and his partnership with Russia, allowing that foreign power to construct missile sites within Cuba -- giving rise to the well documented "Cuban missile crisis."
Midknight Review sees the morning headlines more as the record of pretentious comments by this Communist Assassin. Look, he pretended to a leader of the people, by the people and for the people, before he began is killing ways as Dictator Supreme. Now, after 60 years of abject failure at all levels, we have this story. A repentant Fidel ? We don't think so.
So why the story? Perhaps Castro knows something we don't know. Is Obama preparing to "forgive and forget" this man's murderous ways ? We believe that Obama has rejected this nation's history, in total, and only pretends otherwise for the sake of political survival. If that is true, we expect him to end the Cuban embargo that has been in place since the early 1960's. If Castro's casual talk is more than talk, we believe that it is because he has had discussions with the Administration at some level.
Get ready for the rest of the story.
