Washington (CNN)By Chris Lawrence and Padma Rama -- The Department of Defense recently purchased and destroyed thousands of copies of an Army Reserve officer's memoir in an effort to safeguard state secrets, a spokeswoman said Saturday.

"DoD decided to purchase copies of the first printing because they contained information which could cause damage to national security," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. April Cunningham said.

Editor's notes: Midknight Review was among the first blogs on the internet to report this blatant assault on free speech nearly two weeks ago. We saw Col Shaffer appearance on FoxNews, happy to discuss his book, Operation Dark Heart. In that same afternoon, after the initial announcement that there would be a book burning of Operation Dark Heart by order of the Administration, Col Shaffer made an appearance on Fox but refused to discuss the book, saying only that he was still a member of the US military.

In the morning interview, Col. Shaffer told the listening audience that the book had been fully vetted for top secret information. Of course it was. We all know that without anyone making a statement to that fact. Nothing is written by an active member of the US military without clearance.

But the Obama spinmeisters had not cleared the book for embarrassing information and Shaffer is speaking out. In the CNN article, we have this statement from Col. Shaffer: "The whole premise smacks of retaliation. Someone buying 10,000 books to suppress a story in this digital age is ludicrous."

Point of post: we - Midknight Review - tried to tell you that this stranger in our White House does not believe in free speech.
