Look, I know our troops cannot fight in a war without thinking their sacrifice means something. I know they will tell us that regardless of what Obama does, their contribution is important -- even critically important. And OF COURSE that is true.
But there is another point of view, here. First, we have the soldiers point of view. And we know what they MUST believe or they cannot continue to fight.
The second point of view is that of a parent. I am a parent. No one in my family is in this fight. But friends of mine are. And their parents are scared. And their parents do not want them fighting for a Commander in Chief who wages war as if he were a coward. To imagine that the white flag of retreat is ever considered as a war strategy is beyond the pale. But that is where Obama is headed. That is his commitment. He thinks like an academic, not a leader of men or a soldier or a compassionate president.
Let's not forget that Afghanistan was the war he wanted to have. Yeah. He actually said words to that effect. Remember ?? He was going to search out and destroy Osama bin Laden . Anyone heard him talk about bin Laden, lately ??
We did not finish the job against al Qaeda in Afghanistan. We did not develop new capabilities to defeat a new enemy, or launch a comprehensive strategy to dry up the terrorists' base of support. We did not reaffirm our basic values, or secure our homeland.
Instead, we got a color-coded politics of fear. Patriotism as the possession of one political party. The diplomacy of refusing to talk to other countries. A rigid 20th century ideology that insisted that the 21st century's stateless terrorism could be defeated through the invasion and occupation of a state. A deliberate strategy to misrepresent 9/11 to sell a war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.
And so, a little more than a year after that bright September day, I was in the streets of Chicago again, this time speaking at a rally in opposition to war in Iraq. I did not oppose all wars, I said. I was a strong supporter of the war in Afghanistan. But I said I could not support "a dumb war, a rash war" in Iraq. I worried about a " U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences" in the heart of the Muslim world. I pleaded that we "finish the fight with bin Ladin and al Qaeda." READ THE WORDS AT 'ORGANIZING FOR AMERICA >>>>>
Mark our words: come next July, 2011, Obama will violate ALL of these remarks, every one of his stated intentions, each and every criticism he once held out for George Bush.
Look where he is now. He was opposed to waterboarding (all three murderers actually interrogated with this procedure) but it is just fine to order the death of American traitors and kill terrorists and their families via Drone Warfare. Rendition - the handing over of an enemy combatant to another country, Pakistan or whatever, and letting them interrogate the prisoner. . . . . . he was harsh in his criticism of that practice, yet he does EXACTLY the same thing today, in Afghanistan. He was thoroughly against the Patriot act, but has decided to let it stand. Our soldiers have to mirandize some of those they capture. They cannot following the enemy into a residential zone. In some cases, they must allow the enemy to fire first. The Afghan American generals asked for 40 to 60,000 troops. He took 5 stinking months to decide to give them 30,000 -- as if he had some reason for doing so. Because of that delay, less than 20,000 of the troop allocation is in Afghanistan as we write. Most importantly, he does not care enough about our dying soldiers to validate their deaths with a victory.
Some say, "this war has lasted longer that Viet Nam. It is time to come home." Anyone know how many died in Viet Nam ?? 58,000. In a war that has "lasted longer than Nam," less than 1,100 have died to date. The two wars are not the same. One big difference in found in the terms of surrender. In Nam, we were driven out. In Afghanistan, apparently we are just going to walk out . . . . . walk out on the sacrifice of hundreds of our kids and friends.
A criminal offence, we think . . . . . . . . . AND WHERE THE HECK IS McCAIN AND LINDSEY GRAHAM AND THE REST ? Hell bent on respecting the "Commander in Chief." What a bunch of pathetic morons. They need to ride the same bus as Obama out of town. Disgraceful leaders with no conscience, whatsoever. ---- jds.
