2. He claimed a savings to the nation of 1 trillion dollars due to the health care bill when in fact, Sen Baucus, (D - Mont.) is on recorded saying the bill will cost as much as 3 trillion over the next decade.
3. He claimed a tax cut for 95% of the population. We received part of this "tax cut." It was $250 sent to my savings account. While $250 is real money, it went to pay bills. The truth is that I could have lived without it and not noticed its absence. The only reason why he did not raise taxes was due to the fact that he could not get any of his big bills passed . . . . . thank goodness. Let's not forget that the point of the "tax cut" (also known as a rebate) was to fire up the economy. It did nothing of the kind.
4. Obama said that the last year of Bush saw an annual deficit of 1 trillion dollars -- a flat out lie. Bush's last annual deficit was $400 billion, a far cry from the 1 trillion number Obama presented in the speech.
5. He raised discretionary spending a total of 24% and, tonight, proposes a 3% cut. You do the math. We say "smoke and mirrors."
6. He claimed tax savings for 8 million Americans involved in college education. Understand that during the campaign, he promised a $4,000 tax credit when, in fact, it was $2,500. And this amount is a deduct from the "off the top" income total. The potential tax total on $2,500 is $400 and $500 . If school costs and room and board run $30,000, $400 savings will not keep a student in school. Also, the tax credit is for only 4 years -- a possible total of $2000 against $120,000 in total schooling costs.
7. Another misstatement is this one, "I am trying to change the tone of politics." Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.
8. A commission on jobs was turned down by the Senate this past week. In the speech tonight, he promised to create the commission by "executive order," circumventing the Senate altogether - something he has made a practice of doing. He has no respect for the separation of powers as set up by the Constitution. Legislation limiting Presidential powers needs to be a part of a conservative agenda.
9. We noticed that there was no applause from the military in attendance when Obama mentioned that he would have all troops out of Iraq by August of this year and when he mentioned reversing "don't ask, don't tell." No applause at all. They did applaud at mention of other matters so the absence of same as was deliberate and with meaning.\
10. Obama asserted that he did not sign off on the Congressional deals that passed the health care bill through the Senate in spite of evidence that he via his staff was in the middle of those negotiations. see this link.
And what did this mean?
"We have finally straightened hate crime laws."
"We support the rights of those marching through the streets of Iran." (he has done NOTHING.)
Over all impressions:
He was condescending, speaking down on Republicans, the Supreme Court, the Senate and the military in attendance. He refused to move to the middle, politically, preferring to stay on his Marxist course of action. At the same time, he positioned himself as the "man in middle." The Dems on the Left and the GOP on the Right with Obama mediating the tension as he stands in the gap -- for the people. Geeeez.
This was nothing more than a campaign speech - one we have all heard before. There will be no freeze in 2011. There will be no withdrawal from Iraq by the end of August. He promised the end of "don't ask, don't tell" more than a year ago. He makes that promise again.
And we remain amazed at this statement, noted above:
