From the Hill: Real estate mogul Donald Trump has run an outsider's juggernaut campaign, the likes of which nobody has seen in modern politics.
Democrats
publicly say they are thrilled to face him in the general election.
But, privately, they fret that the master marketer and media maestro is
so unpredictable and so original and so fearless that they just might
regret getting the match-up they had hoped for.
Trump has done all
this in the face of unprecedented opposition from establishment
Republican Party officials and many principled conservatives who make up
the core base of the GOP. At this point in the primary cycle, any other
candidate with numbers like Trump's would have been granted
"presumptive nominee" status by party bosses as well as any final
remaining active candidates.
Editor's note: Nine months ago, I was laughing out loud at the very mention of "Trump for President." As the reader knows, he is not my choice, but his campaign has been nothing short of genius, and just about everyone admits this.
But think that he just might win the nomination before going to the convention, something Mitt couldn't do, is beyond remarkable because it is a reality that is truly "against all odds."
If the Dems are not worried, well, maybe they need to rethink their complacency and retool their arrogance. There really is a "third party." It stands in the shadows and puts up with a lot of crap and broken promises from the political class. Its called "the silent majority." These are folks in the middle, on the Left and the Right, who do not care about party politics and only take part when things get so bad that they have no choice. Well, this may be one of those times.
Time will tell, but this all makes for a very interesting time.
Mission Statement: This blog reviews the news of the day in light of 242 years of American history. "Nationalism," a modern day pejorative, has been our country's politic throughout history, until 2008. Obama changed that narrative. Trump is seeking a return to our historical roots. Midknight Review supports this return to normality.
