Mission Statement: This blog reviews the news of the day in light of 242 years of American history. "Nationalism," a modern day pejorative, has been our country's politic throughout history, until 2008. Obama changed that narrative. Trump is seeking a return to our historical roots. Midknight Review supports this return to normality.
A message from Chris Kyle's widow, posted this past Valentine's weekend.
Perfect example of why being armed won't keep you safe. Both Kyle and his friend were armed with semi automatic weapons on their person and were both shot and killed.... and who is more experienced with the use of a firearm than Kyle? Bottom line: if someone wants to shoot you, your gun isn't going to help cowboy.
I don't like call you "stupid," but this statement is as stupid as stupid gets. There is no one who believes you, on this. I am only "responding" because I am stunned at how nonsensical an intellectual can be. There is somewhere between 600,000 and 1 million defensive/legal gun incidents, per year, in our country. More people are killed by guns in suicide attempts than are killed by guns owned legally.
And more than 5,000 times, per year, a home invader is chased out of a house, because of the use of a gun.
Only if you are a sharp shooter with a 50 caliber weapon, but not if you are up close and personal. At least it is not a slam dunk. Wanna bet? And what the hell is your point. Someone breaks into my house, in the middle of night, and he is not walking out of my house. That is what I am talking about. Why Kyle let this moron "get the drop" on him, is beyond me. It would not have happened that way with me or any number of other guys I know. Maybe Kyle was more trusting than I.
The fact remains that guns, in the hands of law abiding folk, are good things, not bad.
Actually, I do hope you are only making an argument, here. You really should own a gun for home protection . . . . . especially since you don't believe in God.
Guns kept in homes are ELEVEN TIMES more likely to be involved in a fatal or nonfatal accidental shooting, criminal assault against the owner, or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense. For every one incidence of self defense, 11 people are shot by their own gun. FACT. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9715182
I want to shoot you, your gun isn't going to help you. In fact, you are much more likely to be killed by your own gun than have an incident where you use it to defend yourself.
You have your three city study. I have my national statistic review, published in Forbes:
Firearms were used to kill 30,143 people in the United States in 2005, the most recent year with complete data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1 A total of 17,002 of these were suicides, 12,352 homicides, and 789 accidental firearm deaths. Nearly half of these deaths occurred in people under the age of 35. When we consider that there were also nearly 70,000 nonfatal injuries from firearms, we are left with the staggering fact that 100,000 men, women, and children were killed or wounded by firearms in the span of just one year.
"Accidental deaths" would be the category in which the home owner is killed. Like you say, figures don't lie.
