Editor’s notes: Renee Ellmer is in the middle of a huge problem as to her candidacy as Republican Representative from North Carolina, and much of the problem is of her own doing. She has chosen a very combative, rhetorical style in rebutting her critics, whether they be conservative radio hosts, or constituents attending her townhall meetings. Her combativeness is presented in this article, here. I will leave it at that.
The larger concern, and for the sake of this post, is the issue of amnesty and the question, "Is legal status, as a part of a single, comprehensive legislative bill, tantamount to 'amnesty?' " Senate Democrats and some GOP Senate members (McCain and Graham to name two) do not believe that amnesty and "legal status" are the same.
Still, others fear that, regardless of the denials, in time, "legal status" and "amnesty" will be indistinguishable, as legal realities. We no longer live in a day and age when we can trust the Democrats (and some Repulicans) to do what they say. ObamaCare is not the only example of this fact. We were promised that abortion would not be funded via ObamaCare; that was a lie. We have passed countless laws restricting federal funds from being used to support the illegal population in this country, yet, more than 80 cities are now "sanctuaries" for the illegal/undocumented population and California, has decided to administer its version of ObamaCare to its illegal immigrant constituency.

This is a secure border? |
For me, trust is the issue much more than "amnesty versus legal status," and on the issue of trust, there is no debate; Progressive will gladly say one thing as they plot and scheme to do another. Such is a rule in "Rules for Radicals" (the ends justify the means), and has become a platform or venue for social reform within the radicalized, One World without Borders, community. Quality Republicans such as Ellmers still believe that trust is not an issue and in that bit of niaivete', we have a fundamental disagreement.
I want to trust our politicians, especially when they agree to specific compromises. But, the past five years have proven beyond debate, that this trust, has been used to advance that which is untenable and, at times, illegal.
For that reason, this blog, for what it is worth, sides with Senators Mike Lee, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, in seeking an incremental approach toward a comprehensive solution, as referenced below. We start with border security, and go from there. I have included two pictures that frame the border problem. In this case, these pictures win the debate.
Still think our borders are secure?? |
As our primary referenced article (immediately below) states,
""Amnesty" means an official pardon of or decision to not enforce penalties for a specific violation of the law, which puts Ellmers' position clearly within the meaning of the word,"
The Senate bill, which Representative Ellmer supports, levy's penalties and fines, orders the alien - given legal status so he or she can work without fear of deportation - pay those fines and, then, wait "at the back of the line" for citizenship.
What she does not allow for in her thinking, apparently, is this: the plan, I surmise, the real plan (read "scheme"), is to flood the process, making it virtually impossible to use the process for citizenship fulfillment. In the end, we will be "forced" to grant citizenship under the banner of "amnesty," clear out 15 to 20 million folks waiting years and years to gain citizenship, and move on with immigration process reform.

Our "primary referenced article" begins here:
"Amnesty" means an official pardon of or decision
to not enforce penalties for a specific violation of the law, which puts
Ellmers' position clearly within the meaning of the word.
Furthermore, Ellmers position is substantially different
from Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Mike Lee.
Ellmers has, for example, backed the House GOP leadership's immigration
“principles” – which were vigorously opposed by both Cruz and Lee as they were
being proposed, although their opposition was primarily couched in terms of the
timing of bringing a bill forward in 2014.
Lee appeared on Fox News on the morning House GOP
leadership was introducing the immigration principles to members at the
conference retreat in Maryland, where he said he thinks immigration reform
needs to be done in a true step-by-step manner. “In order to reform our
immigration code, and I agree that we need to reform it, we need to undertake
this in a step-by-step fashion, and the very first thing we need to do is
secure the border,” Lee said that morning. “And we also need to reform our
antiquated, outdated visa system – our legal immigration processes.”
“Once those things are done, once those things are in place and
have been verified, then we’ll be in a better place to figure out how to treat
the eleven million people who are here illegally with dignity and respect for
the rule of law," Lee added.
Sen. Lee’s communications director Brian Phillips told
Breitbart News that Ellmers’ position sounds suspiciously like the Senate bill
he fought vigorously when it was under consideration.
"Sen. Lee's position has been very clear: piecemeal
legislation, one bill at a time, verify and evaluate each step as we implement
the reforms,” Phillips said. “We have read Rep. Ellmer's most recent op-ed on
reform and it sounds a lot like how the Gang of Eight tried to sell
comprehensive immigration reform, something Sen. Lee spent several months last
year opposing.”
