WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — The D.C. Council is
considering requiring people to purchase liability insurance before they can
get a license to own a gun. The bill
would mandate that prospective gun owners maintain at least a $250,000 policy.
The policy would cover damages from negligent acts or intentional acts that
aren’t undertaken in self-defense.
A handful of states are considering similar measures, but
none has passed such a law.
The District of Columbia has some of the nation’s strictest
gun-control laws. Handguns were banned in the city before a landmark 2008
Supreme Court ruling. A council
committee will hold a hearing Thursday on the insurance requirement.
Editor’s notes: what
fails to be mentioned in the reporting of this type of story is this fact: such legislation does not make us all
safer. Rather, it only provides lawyers with funding pools needed for their lawsuits. You can bet that the trial lawyers in D.C. are
lobbying hard for this sort of “solution.”
Me? I will report all my guns “stolen”
before I get such coverage. I am buying
insurance to protect from a lawsuit should I ever have to shoot someone
breaking into my home, however. You can
get such coverage through the NRA.
