American Idol just finished its best season after 11 years. We hope it lasts for another decade.

<<<< Phil Phillips was declared the winner and, yes,  that is his version of dressing up for the occasion.  Cool.

Jessica Sanchez, the best 16 year old in the 11 year history of Idol came in 2nd to Phil Phillips,  a 21 year old with a refreshing style that lends itself to putting your player on "repeat,"  kicking back and just grooving with the kid.

The vote total,  deciding tonight's American Idol,  was just over 132 million votes  -  about the same number of folks who voted in the presidential election of 2008.

Philips was so emotional,  after the announcement,  that he could not finish his "victory" song,  but, instead,  left the stage and gathered with his family.  He is one of the most humble of all Idol winners and as unusual a talent,  in a great way,  as has ever been on that program.  I  believe his first single will be a song titled "Coming Home."  I am an enthusiastic fan of American Idol.  It is not a "winner takes all" talent show.  Dozens of young artists have found their careers because of this program.  Jennifer Hudson,  a very well known artist of the day,  finished 5th on the show and her story is somewhat typical.

Update:

From Deadline Hollywood:

New Low for Idol Finale  --  oh well, they still captured 21 million viewers !!

Given that American Idol had been tracking 30% lower than last season, this is not a surprise, but last night’s finale from 8-10:07 PM delivered a preliminary 6.1/18 among adults 18-49. It is projected to go up to a 6.3 rating in the finals, which would still be down 32% from last season’s finale to post the veteran reality series’ lowest-rated closer ever — including the first cycle, which aired in the summer. In total viewers, Idol drew 21.5 million, according to Fox projections, also an all-time low for an Idol finale. The steep year-to-year declines follow a rise for last season’s finale, the first with Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as judges, vs. 2010. Compared with last week,Idol was up 43%. Compared with The Voice‘s Season 2 finale, Idol was higher by 43% in 18-49. Fox won Wednesday night in adults 18-49, total vewers and all other key demos. (Below is a tracker of the American Idol finales’ total viewer and 18-49 results).
