According to PEW,  these were the most important issues,  in descending order.  The economy, the Middle East and the 2012 elections are at the top of the food chain  -  not good news for Obama,  but what is?

Economy, International News Jump in a Busy News Year

21 December 11 The faltering U.S. economy was the No. 1 story in the American news media in the last year, but 2011 was also characterized by a jump of more than a third in coverage of international news. Those are among the findings of The Year in the News 2011, a report from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism based on analysis of some 46,000 stories in newspapers, online sites, television, radio and social media.
