Here is the heart of a story taken from the Washington Post:
Russia delivered at least 1,800 shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles to Venezuela in 2009, U.N. arms control data show, despite vigorous U.S. efforts to stop President Hugo Chavez's stridently anti-American government from acquiring the weapons.
The United States feared that the missiles could be funneled to Marxist guerrillas fighting Colombia's pro-American government or Mexican drug cartels, concerns expressed in U.S. diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks and first reported in the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
It had been unclear how many of the Russian SA-24 missiles were delivered to Venezuela, though the transfer itself was not secret. Chavez showed off a few dozen at a military parade in April 2009, saying they could "deter whatever aerial aggression against our country." A high-level Russian delegation told American officials in Washington in July of that year that 100 of the missiles had been delivered in the first quarter of 2009. . . PERMALINK >>>>
Pictured left are hand held missiles in the family of the SA-24. In other photos, they appear to be 5 to 6 feet in length. Venezuela has purchased between 1,800 and 2,400 of these babies, according to UN observers.
Editor's notes: we first reported this story, months ago, and set the total dollar value of Russian military aid to the new communist outpost that is Venezuela at $5 billion dollars. Recent reports have reduced that total to $4 billion and in the Washington Post article, we now know that the partnership between Russia and Venezuela is not just talk and . . . . . . . it is in our own backyard !!! Thank you very much, Mr. Obama . . . . . . . . . . and Mr. Bush.
Understand that these missiles, SA-24 by name, are the most sophisticated in this class of weaponry in the Russian arsenal. They can shoot down aircraft at 19,000 feet, have night vision capabilities, and can make mid-flight corrections to avoid being shot down.Pictured left, a MI-17 Russian helicopter. Venezuela has purchased at least 6 of these fighters copters. Note the machine guns on each "wing."
To imagine that Obama has "mended the fences" between Russia and our country, that he has "reset" the divide that occurred because of Bush's cowboyism, is no longer opinion open to conjecture or vane, self serving American liberal bias. Obama and company can pretend to be serving the American interest by doing whatever in the world they are doing with foreign policy, but when you had two years to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power and did nothing, when you knew of the military aid coming to Venezuela and did nothing to stop it, when you set and watched the Mexican border conflict grow and grow while doing nothing, someone needs to admit that your foreign policy is worth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . nothing. Is the Bush Administration complicit in this dearth of do-nothingness? Oh, you betcha !!! But Bush is not president and Midknight Review did not begin its review of the political world until 2008.
So, where are we with regard to the communists in Venezuela? At the end of the day, we now have another nation that hates us, loaded down with the kind of arms that could cause us great harm, and this administration has no clue what to do next.
