Fox News chairman Roger Ailes woke up Monday morning thinking that his network and Donald Trump's campaign had reached an understanding.
After a weekend's worth of stressful phone calls, the tacit agreement -- he thought -- was that Trump would stop attacking Ailes' biggest television star, Megyn Kelly, in interviews and tweets."This was the final straw for Roger," according to a source close to the situation.
Ailes' office called Trump's office. We "can resolve this now," Ailes said to Trump, "or we can go to war."
As we all know by now, war was averted. There is mutual respect between the two master negotiators. Trump has stopped criticizing Kelly. And Fox has stopped ignoring Trump on its shows.
Editor's notes: Since I do not watch Morning Joe, I missed the Monday morning call-in from Trump, in which he demanded that Megyn Kelly apologize to him. But, I did watch her show, that evening, in which her opening line was something to this effect: "I will not apologized for doing my job as a journalist." Now I know why she made that statement. Who knows, maybe she was talking to Ailes as much as Trump, but I really believe this was all about Mr. Trump.
Keep in mind that her Monday night program, drew the highest ratings of any on cable news, including Bill O'Reilly. Personally, I believe that Kelly is the heir-apparent to O'Reilly's timeslot. He has been at Fox for 18 years, and his very successful time in the sun, is in its setting days.
At any rate, I was right about Ailes allegiance to Kelly, Trump got trumped, and Megyn has established herself as a powerful media giant. Is she "tea-party?" No. But, she is plenty conservative for my taste, not to mention the fact that she is all about the news, not politics. Treating her as if she belongs to a particular ideology or is, somehow, representative of the Establishment, ignores her work as a journalist . . . . . . Mark Levin and Breitbart not withstanding.
