From the AP we have this – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Saturday she's confident the House will pass health care legislation and dismissed Republican criticism that she did not have enough votes for the measure.
"We're very excited about where we are and will not be deterred by estimates that have no basis in fact," she said during a dedication of the renamed Lim P. Lee Post Office in San Francisco. The post office was renamed after the nation's first Chinese-American postmaster.
Pelosi declined to say when House members would vote on a health care bill, or how many votes that she had secured. Although she added that lawmakers were "on the verge of making history."
Editor's comments: look, we have been here before - on five different occasions over the past 12 months. Understand that when each of these deadlines was missed, it was because the bill failed to get the necessary number of votes to pass through Congress. In other words, this health care bill has been voted down on 5 different occasions. When Obama demands that Congress get something done, it simply means that he is not keeping up with Congressional procedure. His bill has failed over and over again. They HAVE finished their work, over and over again. They have been ready to move on to jobs and the economy for months and months.
If current "whip" counts are correct, the bill is short by 5 votes and has been 5 votes short for nearly a week, now. Talk of Obama's March 18th deadline has been abandoned although the effort continues, of course. And no one is calling for a specific vote. All this sounds familiar.
Arm twisting, closed door deals with taxpayer money, a half dozen Obama speeches, confident talk from the Speaker and then -------------------------------------------------------------------nothin'. Will this be a sixth time for this scenario ? We will know before the week is out.
Obama wanted this done by mid-July of last year. He did not want the bill to be a "positive" for the GOP campaign. It is now mid-March -- less than 7 months before the November 2 elections. Whether the bill passes or fails, it will be a be an issue in the coming mid-term campaign along with Obama's inability to lead the nation, his "jobs" performance and his abject failure at foreign affairs.
Midknight Review has predicted that the bill will fail. We continue with that prediction and hope for the sake of the nation that our prediction proves to be true -- jds.
