"Filibuster" and the "electoral college" portect the minority of this nation. With Obama, Lord knows we need the protection !!!

Here is the news headline:
Harry Reid: Filibuster Rules ‘Likely’ To ChangeWHAT'S YOUR REACTION? — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledged on Wednesday to take a serious look at revising the filibuster rules at the beginning of the next Congress, calling the current level of obstruction in the Senate unacceptable.

We are tempted to agree with Reid in view of the belief that the GOP will retake the Senate this coming November. Without the filibuster, an empowered GOP could easily reverse the effects of an approved health care bill. But the filibuster is there for a very specific reason. It insures a certain level of bi-partisanship. It protects the minority in Congress. The Founding Fathers expected a consensus vote rather that a tyrannical rule of a single person or party. Without the filibuster, there is no way to stop a single party from taking over the national politic.

What is a filibuster? Of course it is "unending talk" but it is really more than that. It is unending debate and it takes a [nominal] two thirds vote (60 votes currently) to bring Senate debate to a close. Bills are passed with a 51 vote simple majority AFTER 60 Senators agree to end debate on that bill. The Senate can table a bill in debate (filibuster) and move on to do other business, but it cannot move on with any bill in debate. If it tables a bill in filibuster to do other legislative work and returns to that bill, debate must be ended with a 60 vote majority before moving on.

Please note one very important matter in the news story quoted above. Reid only wants to change the filibuster beginning with the next congress -- that would be after the 2010 election. If he is not in power, well and good. No changes will have been made during this year. His Democrat Party will welcome the filibuster in the 112th Congress, especially if they are the minority party in the Senate.
